Thorough dissection from the production side! --Why is ASOBOiSM a new generation of artists?

A new generation of expressors. As her various aspects, which had not been revealed until now, became more and more glorious, her feelings became stronger and stronger. ASOBOiSM will hold her first one-man live "ASOBOiSLAND" at Omotesando WALL & WALL on Saturday, March 19th. She is a remarkable artist who goes through the times with free rap and songs, a little poison and humor with plenty of kindness, but it is often talked about how high quality songs are made. There was no. This time, she focused on the production process for the first time and thoroughly dissected the creative side of ASOBOiSM. While her new song "Tomorrow is coming (feat. Shingo Sekiguchi)" is being listened to by a wide range of listeners and gradually recording hits, many listeners are probably paying attention to her now. ASOBOiSM showed many valuable episodes while she said, "I wonder if I can talk so much," in response to my unreasonable order that she wants me to get a glimpse of the parts that I can't usually talk about. A must-read interview for listeners as well as musicians.Interview ◎ Tsuya-chan Photo ◎ Yusuke Itagaki

Talent to possess various people

――I've been following ASOBOiSM for a long time, but I feel like I can't grasp it at all. Looking back, the album "OOTD" (2020) was wonderful, and I started listening to it even more seriously from that time. It's filled with the atmosphere of a new era, and some interesting people have come out. On the other hand, he also participated in Zoomgals, and when he thought he showed a sharp rap, he recently performed a moist song with "Tomorrow is coming", and this is a chilling song again. You are very dexterous, aren't you? Against this background, I would like to dig deeper into the musical background and production aspects. First of all, are there any "points that are unique to ASOBOiSM" in the production process that you are thinking about? ASOBOiSM: I'm good at borrowing the voices of various people in my brain. ... I feel like what I'm saying (laughs). It's a feeling of being possessed by various people regardless of genre. I often do in my head to grasp the characteristics of others in songs and express (sample) them in my own way. ――Do you mean to imitate singing? ASOBOiSM: It's a little different from imitating ... For example, when I made a demo of a song (unreleased) that says "I'll take my mood myself", I imagined Snoop Dogg's rap flow (at the moment). I did. If you listen to it, it doesn't look like snoop at all, and I don't know, but in fact, it's like rhyme, singing, and snoop. That's how I used to play singing with people's voices in my head for a long time. I have somehow drawn out the melody of various artists in my head. That's why I'm good at making songs that match the characteristics of that person's voice, and I think it's suitable for the writer business. I think very often, "This person seems to sing like this." In "Categorizing (feat. Namichie)", some verses are a little conscious of KOHH, and in "Naimonnedari", some of them are images of Billie Eilish. Even when interacting during the production process, I often say, "Imagine someone here." Possessing that person, I express a melody or flow that seems to sing. Of course, it's not all, and balance is important, because if you become a mimicry or if you make a second decoction too much, your originality will not come out. Many people come down in one song. ――That's why there is a wide variety of flows out there. When I listen to "Wasabi", it seems like rap on the way and a completely different expression comes out. I think there are many listeners who are thrilled. ASOBOiSM: Also, in my case, as soon as I make the first (one chorus), I throw it to the arranger. Then, when (arrangement) comes back and the next time I make the second lyrics, the song I'm listening to has changed and my feelings have changed, so a different image will come out and a new flow will come out. do. Because I didn't make it by myself, once I let go of my hand, the song became different. ――I think that "everyone" is something that everyone is doing to get inspiration in the production process, but people who are consciously trying to possess various people to that extent. I think there aren't many. ASOBOiSM: I think it's a special ability. When I just listen to the songs, I get the impression that Vaundy-san, who can do anything and is dexterous in every system, so I'm wondering how to make it. ――But the perspective of singing around and referring / quoting singing styles is interesting. It may be a feeling after streaming, but if you are consciously sampling at such a physical level. ASOBOiSM: In the first place, I like making things, not just music. I love making Ichi from scratch, and I don't often love it after making it separately. I think it's cool to be a carpenter and build a house. I wanted to play the guitar when I was a teenager, but I couldn't cover it because I couldn't keep up with the technique, so I made it myself and sang it. Then my friend praised me. I've been thinking that it's fun to make music from there. Everyone was inspired by making it ... Oh, so do carpenters build a house! I think. I also like DIY, knitting, cooking and drawing. As soon as I go to an art exhibition, I want to do it myself and go home to draw, so I think it's easy to be influenced as a creator.

The moment when lyrics are born

――It is said that the stimulus you receive immediately leads to your own desire for expression. It's a genuine artist. By the way, I think one of the features of ASOBOiSM is the lyrics that mix a little humor and poison with straight kindness, but how is the lyric usually written? ASOBOiSM: I usually write a lot of lyrics in the notepad of my smartphone. It's like writing down your emotions. (Looking at the screen) Well, the latest one is ... the lyrics of the tentative title "I'll take money" (laughs). The guy I wrote based on what I was talking to a girl friend the other day. At the scene where there are many men, I was told that I was barely sexually harassed, and I felt like I had no place to laugh and respond. Of course, I felt that the place had to go smoothly, so I went through with a smile without saying anything. At a later date, he talked about it with his friends, saying, "It's like a cabaret club for entertaining one person," and "I really want to get some money!" But, isn't this something that every woman is experiencing? Especially in the music industry, there are many men, so when I talk about something really boring that I'm seen as a sexual object, I think "I'm going to take money from you?" The memo says, "A woman who can't deal with it is boring / this line is blurry." When making lyrics, I will work on arranging them based on these things. ――For example, if you say "I'll take money", how do you arrange it? ASOBOiSM: If it's this song, it feels a bit prideful and I think it would be nice to have an aggressive song. Also, Hook, for example, let's loop the phrase "give me money" (laughs). I wonder if I'll be looking for a beat that suits Splice and other ideas that are coming up with that kind of feeling. Or find a good phrase while playing the guitar. That's how you make a demo track, and the track arrangements from there onwards are left to the trusted professionals. ――Did you already have a solid image of the music video when you wrote the song? ASOBOiSM: When I wrote the song, I had the image that I wanted a strong color and picture like Billie Eilish's "Bad Guy". But usually, I don't think it's solidified to that extent. There is a vague color direction, though. That's about the image, and after all, there are many people who want to "work with this kind of person" or "this time this kind of person seems to fit". ――The other thing that makes me wonder is why ASOBOiSM's songs are so organized? That's the point. Even if there are so many songs, the album "OOTD" is also neatly organized by being stripped off all over. ASOBOiSM: But that work wasn't made from the beginning with the stance of making an album. It's basically a single, and it's a collection of albums. Therefore, it may be that the landing points that I see with the creators are the same. Before Corona, we had a training camp together. We all went to Okinawa. Everyone is too good! I really respect you. It's natural, but I want to be involved with creators as a "person" as much as possible. It can't be helped a little now (because it's Korona-ka), but it's unpleasant to complete it only on the data. It's important to love that person and see each other's vibes. Everyone wants to make something that is purely good, not business-oriented. The label sometimes suggests "How about a creator like this?", But I don't react to that at all. (Laughs) ――I see. ASOBOiSM is the director of "Team ASOBOiSM" rather than doing everything himself. If you sow the seeds and show the direction of blooming, your trusted friends will bloom in all directions. I feel that it is close to the role of a so-called president. In fact, I think it's a similar mindset to a young entrepreneur. After all, those people are also asking about their existence value through corporate activities. The form of self-expression in this era is amazing. ASOBOiSM: In a sense, it may be an aspect of presenting a way of life. My friends say, "It's really amazing to stick to what you like and want to do, it's usually impossible." I also want to be that way all the time.

A sense of distance from hip-hop and rap

――What kind of music does ASOBOiSM usually listen to? ASOBOiSM: I'm not that familiar and enthusiastic. There are many days when I don't want to listen to music today, and sometimes I get asked "Do you hate music?" (Laughs). I usually listen to the sounds of waterfalls and rivers, and when I move, I listen to NETFLIX dramas and YouTube laughing videos with just the audio. That is more calm, isn't it? ――Hey, it's surprising! Cypress Ueno-san, as a member of Zoomgals, there are many people around ASOBOiSM who listen to a lot of music, so that was exactly the image. ASOBOiSM: It's easy to think that you're very familiar with music. Of course, when I drank with my senior artists, hip-hop was always playing, but I didn't know it at all. When I was asked "Do you know this?" And answered "I don't know", I was told "You're not a singer!" And thought "I'm a singer-songwriter ..." (Smile). Besides, GANG STARR is played and "Let's say this song name" "Don't you know this?", It's almost always like that. Isn't it so free to listen to music? !! Don't you think ――There are still many such scenes, not just in the hip-hop area. ASOBOiSM: When I started rap, I thought I had to study this properly. As long as I do rap, it's not good to borrow the culture without knowing anything. That's why I studied including the underground. I read magazines and listened to all the works that Seiko Ito was talking about in a dialogue. I thought that respect for hip-hop must be fundamental. However, I don't know the old school songs at all because I can't keep up with my knowledge. But I don't think it's a shame that you don't know. If you don't know, you can listen to it, and it's not great because you know everything. I don't hide what I don't know, and I think that's fine. That's why I've been studying for a long time. Ask them to tell me, "I'm sorry, I don't know, please tell me." ――That's all right now. Music may be more enjoyable if you know it, but if you push it ... ASOBOiSM: Everyone, you have the knowledge in your head like a dictionary. It was extremely difficult to remember the names of people in history textbooks. But how do you all remember what kind of work was released in what year? (Laughs) It's really strange. Because I don't have that kind of ability, I have a longing for it. Mania is cool. ――Mr. ASOBOiSM has a high level of rap skills, so everyone expects something and may want to get involved. ASOBOiSM: I'm honing my rap technique. However, in reality, I was allowed to do it with Cypress Ueno and Zoomgals, and I just enjoyed the title of "rapper", so it is natural that hip-hop people say "this is not hip-hop". I also feel that. ――What is the inevitability of ASOBOiSM using the means of rap? ASOBOiSM: If you write a song and feel the need for it, you choose rap instead of singing. There is certainly a story that can only be told by rap. I have a rather cute voice quality, so rap is more suitable when I want to strongly convey my direct feelings because the dos is not effective. ――You mentioned MOROHA's live performance as an opportunity to be attracted to rap. ASOBOiSM: That's right. Also, like Wonderboy and GADORO, I like people who manipulate words emotionally. I don't think there are many women who do such rap. It's like Dengaryu's "swaying". By the way, yesterday at the beauty salon, I was told, "Are you a rapper? Well, aren't you just scary people or yankees?" When I said, "I'm wearing sneakers, I'm a sneaker," he said, "I'm really close to you!" (Laughs). There aren't any female musicians who are "swaying". ――Finally, I would like to ask you about your enthusiasm for the first one-man live scheduled for March 19, but the situation is quite difficult ... (* In the interview, priority measures such as prevention of spread due to coronavirus were announced at the end of January.) ASOBOiSM: It seems that my heart will be broken because I worked hard. I have no choice but to believe that I can do it. But now I understand that I still can't buy tickets in this situation. I have no choice but to pray. I will do my best to prepare. ――I hope to see you live on March 19th.
