[Nishikawa's irregular column] Japanese Samsung "S27A850D" ~ 27 PLS panel 2560 × 1440 point liquid crystal display

　Japan's Samsung announced on January 10 that as the 2012 model, the LCD lineup has taken on a new look, and 20 models will be available in turn from January 19. This time I would like to introduce the "S27A850D" with 27 PLS panels.

　PLS (Plane To Line Switching) LCD panel, although I know it exists, but this is the first time for me to try a real machine. I'm interested in how it's different from IPS. From the company's home page published in the "LCD panel feature comparison" table, the biggest difference is the "transmittance", the PLS style is higher than the IPS type. Kalari wants to see the same page, but if the transmittance is high, it will become brighter, and as a result, if it is the same brightness, it will save power than the IPS type.

　On January 10th, the PLS adopted two products: type 27 "S27A850D" and type 24 "S24A850DW". In summary, the former is about 27 / 2560 × 1440 points / DVI-D × 2, DisplayPort/69800 yen, and the latter is 24 / 1920 × 1200 points / DVI-D, mini D-Sub15 pin, DisplayPort/39800 yen or so. Although the composition of the input is somewhat different, the difference in type 3 + resolution is a difference of 30,000 yen. This time, the editorial department received a "S27A850D" of type 27. The main specifications are as follows:

　The screen size is 27. As written at the beginning, it is a PLS LCD panel. The LED backlight is non-glossy. The maximum resolution is 2560 × 1440 points, which is the maximum level as a general display connected to PC.

　The gamut is compared to sRGB at 100%. The angle of view is 178 degrees up / down / left and right, the response speed of the intermediate color is 5ms, the brightness is 300cd/ square m, and the contrast is 1 million 1 (dynamic contrast 5 million: 1). Can be said to be standard performance in this class.

　The input includes 2 dual-link DVI-D, 1 DisplayPortx, 3 USB 3.0, 1 USB uplink, line input, headset output and power input. The key point of the built-in 3-port USB 3.0 Hub is high. The speakers are not built in. It also supports PBP (Picture By Picture), which displays two inputs side by side on one screen.

　The maximum power consumption is 69W (without USB 53W). According to the company, the power consumption is 30 per cent lower than that of IPS at the same brightness. As a reference, the author has a maximum of 100W EIZO "CG245W", a maximum of 250W Apple "Thunderbolt Display" (Thunderbolt Display in MacBook Pro charging), and a maximum of 120W HP "ZR2740w" (the factory's initial setting is 95W), which greatly reduces power consumption compared with the ZR2740w with the same size and resolution.

　In addition, through the "eco-motion sensor" and "eco-light sensor" function, you can simply set the brightness of the backlight from the menu in 3 stages (50pm, 75pm) from normal use, and it is also equipped with the "Magic Eco function (ecological preservation)", which can more easily support energy-saving functions.

　Maximum height 150 mm, tilt front 2 degrees to back 25 degrees, rotation 270 degrees, also supports pivot. The size is 642.5 × 442.5 × 224.5 mm (width × depth × height), but it contains brackets. The thinnest part of the LCD panel (edge side) is very thin in actual measurement, about 2 cm. The weight was 6.6kg (including stent) and 4.5kg without stent.

　The angle of view is that there is a considerable angle between the top and bottom of the photo of the door, but there is little change in color and contrast compared with the front photo. It can be said to be similar to the IPs style. The color rendering is accurate, and the standard setting is slightly gorgeous, but it has a degree of relaxation and high contrast. As a general display, it can be said to be more than sufficient.

　In the design, only the sides of the edges are glossy black, while the others are made up of matte black, creating a calm atmosphere. I just think the base is a little big. Since the weight of the bracket is 6.6 kg, it is painless to move or change position slightly.

　The adjustment of height, tilt, rotation and pivot is not too heavy or too light. He moved and jumped to a stop. It doesn't shake, it's stable, it gives people a good impression.

　You can see from the photo that cable management is very simple. Thick AC cable and DVI cable, DisplayPort cable, and 4 USB cables, etc., all of which may be a little tight, but it's okay to use them usually.

　What is interesting is the handling of the AC adapter. When taken out of the package, the cable coming out of the AC adapter is strangely short (about 50 cm), and the position of the power switch and the AC entrance (there is a Mickey connector on the back of the power switch) is not ordinary, so care is that there is a recess on the top of the back that can accommodate the AC adapter. It's the Karakri that's set up there.

　Although a variety of monitors have been tried over the years, this is the first time this device has been tried. At present, it is not clear whether to attach importance to the thinness of the specification, or considering that the power supply can be easily replaced even if the power supply fails, but this is a reasonable installation.

　OSD is quite rich in content, including ECO-related schema settings. If you simply explain the slightly incomprehensible parts, "MAGIC Bright" optimizes the image quality according to the environment, and "MAGIC Color" is the image quality improvement technology developed by the company to achieve bright natural colors without reducing the picture quality.

　The content is as follows.

　Video MAGIC Bright (user adjustment / standard / game / cinema / dynamic contrast). Video recording MAGIC Color (off / demo / full / smart). All include the improvement of the picture quality of the skin color, the demonstration is the comparison of the picture with the usual mode, and the intelligence is the improvement of the picture quality other than the skin color. Video brightness / contrast / sharpness / reaction time (standard / high speed / maximum speed).

　Hue red / green / blue / color temperature (blue 1 / blue 2 / standard / red 1 / red 2 / user settings) / gamma (mode 1 / mode 2 / mode 3).

　Size and position PBP (Picture By Picture) mode (on / off) / contrast. At this point, the left side is the number 1 or DisplayPort, and the right side is the number 2. The resolution is 1280 × 1440 points or 1280 × 1024 points.

　All the functions that consumers need are included, although there is no particular dissatisfaction, but the expression is vague, and the part that wants to change the watch slightly is the hue. "Standard / gamma 1" is considered to be sRGB (6500K/2.2), but neither the color temperature nor gamma uses any specific value. It is disturbing whether it really exists.

　The accompanying drive CD includes ICM configuration files, display drivers including "MagicRotation Auto", manuals, setup programs, and so on. MagicRotation Auto is a device that detects the rotation of the display through the sensor and automatically rotates the Windows screen.

　For reference, compare the accompanying "SMS27A850.icm" with sRGB in Mac OS X's ColorSync utility, which is the published chart (the lighter part on the back is sRGB, and the darker part is SMS27A850.icm).

　As mentioned above, S27A850D has two DVI-D and one DisplayPort, and by using the PLS panel, it is attractive to save energy while inheriting the breadth of IPS perspective. The built-in USB3.0 Hub is also very important.

　Although LCD displays with IPS panels have become cheaper recently, if this is the content, the price is reasonable enough. This is a candidate for users who are looking for a high-end 27 LCD.
