5 Ways to See Your iPhone Comfortably in the Dark

Looking at the bright screen of your iPhone in the dark can cause eye strain and sleeplessness in the middle of the night. However, one of the accessibility settings, "dark mode," can solve this problem.

Here are 5 ways to make your iPhone look comfortable even in the dark.

1. Enable "Dark Mode"

What is the "dark mode" of the iPhone? As the name implies, "dark mode" changes the background color of various iOS elements (settings, iMessage, etc.) from light to dark.

Also, the text color is changed to a color that has contrast with the dark background color.

Changing this setting is fairly easy. Just go to "Settings> Screen Display and Brightness" and select "Dark" from the two options "Light" and "Dark" in Appearance mode.

Alternatively, you can go to the settings screen, swipe down to bring up the search bar, and type "dark" to go to the "screen display and brightness" screen.

You can also set it to automatically switch from "light mode" to "dark mode". If you enable the "Auto" toggle under the "Light" and "Dark" options, the iPhone will switch modes based on sunrise and sunset (you can also specify the time).

Many of Apple's apps change colors and more to match the new "dark mode." Safari, for example, has a black background and gray details. The app folder on the home screen is darkened from light gray to dark gray.

How to enable "Dark Mode" in Control Center

You can also use the Control Center as a convenient way to switch between "light mode" and "dark mode" on your iPhone.

To set this, go to Settings> Control Center and look for "Dark Mode" in the list under "Add Control". Tap the green "+" icon to the left of the name to add it to the Control Center.

Now you can switch between light and dark modes on your iPhone with the tap of a button in the Control Center.

Put it in dark mode using a third party app

Many apps have their own dark modes and dark themes.

For example, open a book in the Books app, tap the middle of the screen, and tap the "AA" font icon at the top. Then, you can change the font, font size, etc. on the pop-up screen.

In the same window, tap the black circle to read with white text on a black background. Please be assured. This color scheme is easy on the eyes, and you can adjust the brightness to your liking.

As an example of a third-party app, Outlook can also automatically switch to light or dark settings. "YouTube" also has its own dark mode, which you have to switch manually.

2. Enable "Automatic brightness adjustment" and "Lower white point"

"Automatic brightness adjustment" is not strictly dark mode, but it can make the screen easier to see with different levels of brightness. Adjust the brightness of the iPhone screen according to the brightness of the environment.

If you are in a dark room, the screen will automatically go dark. On the other hand, if you move your iPhone under lighting in a dark room, the screen will brighten.

To enable "Auto Brightness", go to "Settings> Accessibility> Screen Display and Text Size" and enable the "Auto Brightness" toggle.

Just above "Automatic brightness adjustment" is "Lower white point". When this toggle is enabled, the bright colors will darken so you can use your iPhone in the middle of the night without blinding.

3. Use "Night Shift"

iOS "Night Shift" automatically or according to the schedule you set, replaces the cool colors on the iPhone screen with warm colors and adjusts them. This is convenient when viewing the screen in a dark place at night or in a place with low light.

When Night Shift was first implemented in iOS 9.3, there was only a small toggle in the Control Center. Apple has changed iOS 10 to make "Night Shift" stand out and display it in the Control Center with a large "Night Shift" label.

And finally, in iOS 11, the control center has a toggle embedded in it.

To enable "Night Shift" manually, swipe up from the bottom of the screen (for iPhones with a home button) or swipe down from the top right of the screen to open the Control Center.

For iPhone 6S and later devices, brightness control can be controlled with 3D Touch. Alternatively, press and hold the brightness slider.

When the slider is displayed in full screen, there is a "Night Shift" button below it, alongside "Dark Mode" and "True Tone".

To go to the "Night Shift" settings, open "Settings> Screen Display and Brightness> Night Shift". Here you can set the time to turn Night Shift on and off. You can also select "Manually enable until tomorrow" or adjust the "Color temperature".

"Night Shift" makes the screen a faint orange, but you may not like it.

4. Enable "Reverse (Smart)"

If you don't like the orange-colored screen of "Night Shift", there is also a way to invert the color of your iPhone screen.

"Dark Mode" basically inverts the screen color with white or light gray text on a black background. Inverting colors has long been part of iOS's capabilities as an "invert (classic)" option. Starting with iOS 11, a new option called "Reverse (Smart)" has been added.

"Invert (Smart)" inverts the colors of the iPhone screen like "Invert (Classic)", but not all. Apps that use images, media, and dark color styles will not be flipped.

To enable "Invert (Smart)", go to "Settings> Accessibility> Screen Display and Text Size" and enable "Invert (Smart)".

5. Enable "Night Mode" in Firefox

The blue light emitted by the iPhone screen can have a negative effect on your sleep patterns.

If you like to surf the internet in bed before going to bed, you can also use Firefox's "night mode" feature. If "Dark Mode" is already enabled on your iPhone, Firefox will automatically switch to "Night Mode".

If you want to use "Light Mode" on your iPhone and "Night Mode" on Firefox, tap the menu icon to the right of the toolbar to enable the "Night Mode" option.

Easy on the eyes and the battery

At night, using "Dark Mode" or the app's Dark Theme on your iPhone will not only be eye-friendly, but will also save battery power. Please take advantage of it.
