Using "Rakuten UN-LIMIT" with a mobile Wi-Fi router (+F FS030W connection edition)

Using "Rakuten UN-LIMIT" with a mobile Wi-Fi router (+F FS030W connection edition)

In the mastering section, we explain how to improve the radio wave condition of your home Wi-Fi, but you urgently need to prepare an internet connection at home to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19). For those who don't, we explain how to build an Internet connection environment using a mobile line as a special edition. A mobile line is very useful when you want to introduce it in a hurry without waiting for line construction.

This time, I prepared another compact type Wi-Fi router

"Refreshing my home Wi-Fi 'I don't know'! Mastering the use" series article list

Following the mastery of mobile Wi-Fi routers, we have practiced mastery of compact Wi-Fi routers that are convenient to carry around.

Last time, I tried using my NEC Platforms "MP01LN" with Rakuten Mobile's "Rakuten UN-LIMIT" line SIM attached, but unfortunately it only connected to the roaming line of our partner au. Therefore, even within the area, it was not possible to connect to the Rakuten UN-LIMIT line.

This is due to restrictions on the frequencies supported by MP01LN, and the improved version "MP02LN" can be used without problems. Of course, if the MP01LN is used with a cheap SIM from NTT DoCoMo's MVNO, these problems will not occur. This series of mobile Wi-Fi routers is inexpensive and ultra-compact, so it should be very useful for casual use on the go.

This time, I prepared a compact type mobile Wi-Fi router called Fujisoft "+F FS030W" for the purpose of connecting to the Rakuten UN-LIMIT line. The price is reasonable, and it supports 3 carriers, NTT docomo, au, and Softbank. So, you should be able to use it without problems even on the Rakuten UN-LIMIT line. It seems that it is often sold in combination with MVNO cheap SIM, but Amazon.co.jp is easy to obtain alone.

Fujisoft "+F FS030W"

+F FS030W is a compact type, but like an indoor Wi-Fi router, you can use all "W52", "W53" and "W56" in the 5GHz band. Since it is also equipped with a DFS function that is a countermeasure against weather radar, it is possible to use W52, which is not affected by indoors, and W56, which is outdoors.

Regarding the 5 GHz band of compact type mobile Wi-Fi routers, please refer to the previously posted "Check Wi-Fi router channel settings (5) [Notes on mobile Wi-Fi routers]". Since it supports the 5 GHz band, Wi-Fi 5 (IEEE 802.11ac) can communicate at a maximum of 433 Mbps. However, it should be noted that the 2.4GHz band and 5GHz band can be used by switching between them, and they cannot be used at the same time.

Also, if you connect the AC adapter, it will work even if the battery is removed, so it is convenient to use it at home with the power on. It does not keep charging for a long time and is kind to the battery. If you use an optional cradle, you can also connect to a wired LAN, making it easy to use as a stationary device.

A SIM is installed when you first start using it, but please note that the SIM size is not the nano SIM that is used in smartphones these days, but a slightly larger micro SIM. The SIM for the Rakuten UN-LIMIT line is provided as a multi-type card with multiple sizes of notches, so it is better to separate it with the size of microSIM instead of nanoSIM.

Rakuten UN-LIMIT line SIM can be used with both nanoSIM and microSIM

Since the SIM is inserted with a metal cover instead of a slot, there is no problem of the adapter part getting caught on the pin. Using an adapter that increases the size of nanoSIM to microSIM, it is easy to use even when using one card with a nanoSIM smartphone.

The SIM slot is a type that is fixed with a metal cover

After inserting the SIM into the slot, it is usually necessary to set the connection destination "APN" as we did last time, but the +F FS030W is already connected. I was able to connect to the Rakuten UN-LIMIT line without doing anything immediately after turning on the power due to the APN automatic setting function.

I was connected automatically without setting the APN

You can use it by changing the initial SSID and encryption key, but there is a function called "Easy setting", so just in case, I have set the APN profile and SSID.

+F FS030W can switch the main screen with a button push, but the SSID and encryption key are displayed on the second screen, and the QR code for SSID connection is displayed on the next screen. By reading this from the +F setting tool app, you can connect to Wi-Fi.

The current SSID and encryption key are displayed on the second screen. That's what's written as "Primary..."

Use the "+F Setting Tool" app for Android/iOS for settings. However, since the application setting item itself is just a URL link, it is the same even if you access "192.168.100.1" with a web browser and set it.

The screen of the "+F Setting Tool" app that connects to the displayed initial SSID. Tap [Settings]. You can also log in to the setting screen by reading the QR code from here. Enter the initial password "admin". If you look at the home screen where you can access "192.168.100.1" with a web browser, "Rakuten" will be displayed as the business name. Tap the upper left "←"

However, when reading the +F FS030W QR code with iOS (or iPadOS), you will be asked to install a configuration profile, so the procedure is somewhat complicated. It would be easier to simply connect to Wi-Fi manually from the smartphone settings screen.

This time I was able to set it using "Easy setting", but APN can also be set from [Profile setting] in [Mobile network setting] on the setting screen. If you want to change the settings, do so here.

Tap [Easy Settings]. Enter any name for [Profile name] where the setting wizard starts, and enter "rakuten.jp" for [APN]. Proceed with [Next]

The Wi-Fi frequency is set to 2.4GHz by default, so I want to actively use the 5GHz band. For indoor use, start with "W52", and if it's crowded, choose "W53" or "W56". The 2.4 GHz band and 5 GHz band are the types that are used by switching between them.

Select one of the 5GHz bands in [Frequency]. Any indoor use is fine. Enter an arbitrary SSID and security key (encryption key) to [Next] Be sure to change the login password to the setting screen Check the settings and tap [Finish] to save. Rebooted. Connect to the set Wi-Fi After connecting to Wi-Fi, I measured the line speed with a speed test app.

See the article below for the original SSID and encryption key settings.

However, with this +F FS030W, it is not possible to distinguish whether the connection line is Rakuten UN-LIMIT band 3 or au roaming line band 18. No matter which one is connected, the line is only displayed as "Raktuen". Next time, let's take a look at how this band is used.
