Word is an indispensable tool for creating documents for business and private use. For business use, computers are often used, but more and more people, especially students, are using iPads. Do you know that Office including such words can be used for free if certain conditions are met on the iPad? Here's how to save money with Word on your iPad.
One of the Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) services provided by Microsoft is Office Mobile, which can be used on mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones. There is a service for people who can use Office for free under certain conditions. Android, iOS (iPadOS), Windows, etc.
[Reference] Microsoft "Office 365" is rebranded to "Microsoft 365", what changes?
Office Mobile (Microsoft)
The free version of the iPad has limited functions and is not exactly the same as the paid version. For example, the following functions are not available in the free version.
■ Change page orientation ■ Insert and edit word art ■ Add and edit graph elements ■ Insert section breaks ■ Add created colors to shapes
The free version of Office Mobile is limited to "view + simple edit" for mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones of 10.1 inches or less, and "view only" for screen sizes larger than 10.1 inches. In order to use the full functions of Office Mobile, regardless of the screen size, it is necessary to purchase a license for the paid version of Office Mobile (Microsoft 365 service).
If you want to correct the text a little on the go, you can also use the free version. However, in the case of iPad, there are conditions under which the free version can be used.
The condition for using the free versions of Office and Word is that the iPad screen size is 10.1 inches or less. The current iPad, which is called the 7th generation, has a screen size of 10.2 inches, so it is not covered. However, the 6th generation iPad one generation ago is 9.7 inches, so you can use the free version.
As of May 2020, the latest iPad Pro has screen sizes of 12.9 inches and 11 inches. Unfortunately, the free version doesn't work at this size. Only the 9.7-inch model released in 2016 is eligible for the iPad Pro.
The current iPad Air is the third generation. The screen size here is 10.5 inches, and this model can not be used either. However, the iPad Air 2, one generation ago, is 9.7 inches and falls under the terms of use of the free version.
The screen size of the iPad mini is 7.9 inches, so it's free. This hasn't changed since the original iPad mini.

Although the basic functionality is the same, the interface and menus look different, so be careful. First, make sure you know which menu contains the functions you use all the time.
Office Mobile saves files in the same format, maintaining compatibility with regular Office. Diagrams and tables are basically displayed in the same way.
When using Office on an iPad, you need to be careful about where the files are saved. For desktops and laptops, it is often stored on the SSD of the main unit, and for business, it is often stored on a network drive.
In the case of an iPad, it can be “within this iPad”, “iCloud”, “OneDrive” of Office, or a cloud (Dropbox, etc.) separately contracted by yourself. There are a few things to keep in mind when saving to the cloud.
There are two possible problems with this. The first is the issue of capacity. It would be nice if you could increase the capacity with a paid contract, but if you have a free plan for iCloud or OneDrive, the capacity is 5GB, and people who store photos and videos will soon be full. If you are dealing with a lot of photos and videos, buy more capacity in advance and increase it.
The second is a network issue. If you are traveling by train, pay attention to the communication environment. You can't save when you're out of service area or in an environment where Wi-Fi isn't connected.
When you have finished creating a document, you can save it in PDF format by selecting "Save icon" → "Export" → "PDF (*.pdf)". If there are many photos in the document and the file size becomes large, saving it in PDF format makes it easier to share.
If you go to "Save icon" → "Print" → "AirPrint", printers in the same Wi-Fi network will be displayed and you can print. However, the printer you are using must be compatible with AirPrint.
This time, we introduced Office Mobile mainly for iPad, but you can use it for free without any problem if you have an iPhone with a maximum screen size of 6.5 inches (current iPhone 11 Pro Max). If you make a habit of saving your documents to iCloud or OneDrive, you can check and modify your Office documents at any time. If you want to make minor corrections to the text, please use it.
